İstanbul was
the capital of the world’s two great empires,
the East Roman Empire and the Ottoman, for
1600 years. In addition to its already well-known
monuments, İstanbul has been fitted out with
stunningly beautiful and diverse
constructions throughout history. Writing
with a certain pedantry, a requirement for
being an Archaeologist Guide, I hope these
275 pages and more than 1500 photos,
architectural drawings will introduce the
monuments hidden in nooks and crannies to
all travellers interested in architecture
and arts. In the preparation of these pages,
I have drawn considerably on the information
I gained while working as a guide and the
information I gathered during my library
research, which has intensified over the
last few years.
I am indebted to the architect Fulya
Babaoğlu for arranging the paintings and
drawings, to the archaeologist Şevket Aktaş
for taking the photos and to Susan Tesei who
proofread the English version of the text.
